3406b in 1985 Ford 190000 miles, seems to run fine at low rpm till you get up 16-1800 rpm (it's getting worse) then it cuts out totally (loss of power but stays running) with a large cloud of black smoke. It will run again at low rpm if you let off the fuel and coast a Minute of so. Fuel pressure stays around 35-40 psi. Air fuel ratio diaphragm replaced. Any ideas? Please!

Assuming you have a clean air cleaner element, and no intake air restrictions..........next thing to check would be the turbo......

double check the diaphram again, it may have torn while installing it. what about the timing advance? are the flyweights damaged or worn, maybe the orings in the advance are worn. have you noticed any stumbling or anything of that nature?

Thanks for your response. I'm going to feel real dumb (but happy) if its as easy as a air filter. I thought it should have been fine but I just checked it and it worse the I thought. First thing in the morning I'll pick one up.

Thanks Desertstormboy The first diagram looked Ok but we replaced it anyway. So I would hope that's not it. I'll be a "happy idiot" if the air filter work's. I was told to check it awhile back but thought it was fine. I thought that would be too simple. If it is I'll swallow my pride and let you know.
